As a way to communicate on a regular basis with our families, you will receive a Spartan Update Newsletter by email every Friday. This will provide important information and details about upcoming events at school to help you support your children at home and be engaged in our school activities.
PROJECT HOPE KIDS FAIR
The Project Hope Kids Fair is coming up on Sunday, August 25th at Cesar Chavez Elementary School, 4:00 – 5:30pm. Project Hope is a growing community partnership of churches and businesses that fund raise an entire year to provide shoes and backpacks with school supplies in a fun, safe and engaging environment for families that are in need. If you would like to take advantage of this program, please email or call Heather Acharya (email@example.com) 541-790-8300 or just stop by the office to get a ticket.
We would like to apologize for the confusion regarding the school supply list and the different versions that have been posted on the district website. Attached to this email is the correct school supply list. We realize that many families may have already shopped, so if you are missing a needed supply and you need assistance please let us know.
BACK IN BUSINESS DAY – TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3RD

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4TH – FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL FOR 6TH GRADE
This day is designed to welcome our 6th grade students to Spencer Butte Middle School. WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) leaders will work in groups to provide 6thgraders with information about Spencer Butte and strategies that will help them be successful in middle school. Students will go through their class schedule and practice their locker combinations as well.
FREE BREAKFAST AND LUNCH ON WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4TH
4j is moving to a self-operated nutrition service model after decades of working with large school food management companies, most recently Sodexo. To invite students to try the new menu, Nutrition Services will be providing free breakfast and lunch for our 6th graders and WEB leaders on Wednesday, September 4th. Normally breakfast is served from 8:30 to 9:00am, but will be served during the school day on Wednesday so all present students will have access.
ICE CREAM SOCIAL
Please come to our Family Ice Cream Social on Thursday, September 5th from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. Meet and socialize with other SBMS families. We will be serving several different flavors of ice cream, including a dairy-free option, for a suggested donation of one dollar per bowl.
WALK THE AMAZON
We would like to announce our fall fundraiser – Walk the Amazon! On Friday, October 4th all students, staff and volunteers will walk a 5K route along the Amazon Creek trail. This is a great opportunity to build community while raising money for our school. We will need lots of volunteers to make this event a success. Stay tuned for more information.
FREE/REDUCED LUNCH APPLICATIONS
In these tough economic times, many families are finding their finances tighter than ever. The school meal program may be able to help. The program is confidential, easy, and good for both your budget and our school.
A new application (one per household) must be completed each school year to qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. Applications are available online (https://district.ode.state.or.us/apps/frlapp/), in the school office, and at the 4J Education Center (200 North Monroe, Eugene), and can be returned to your school or to the 4J Education Center.
BUS ROUTES ONLINE

VOLUNTEER BACKGROUND CHECKS
Community and parent volunteers new to a school need to complete an online volunteer background check at – https://www.helpcounterweb.com/welcome/apply.php?district=eugene. All information on the application is sensitive and will be maintained in a confidential manner.
