As a way to communicate on a regular basis with our families, you will receive a Spartan Update Newsletter by email every Friday. This will provide important information regarding upcoming dates/events and to help you support your children at home and be engaged in our school throughout distance learning.

The district has developed student schedules for Comprehensive Distance Learning. This is a link to elementary, middle, and high school schedules.

Teachers are just returning to school next Tuesday and we will be working together to determine exactly how this schedule will work for staff and students. A few things I do want to share in advance:

(1) This is an entirely new type of schedule, with synchronous learning (happening in real time in the afternoons only) and asynchronous learning (happening when learning is most convenient for students/families). You will be getting more information from teachers on all of this as we move forward.

(2) We are very conscious about balancing two opposing ideas: it is great to have students connect over video conferencing to feel more connected AND too much screen time, especially video conferences, can be mind numbing.

(3) We will share student schedules as soon as that is possible. At this writing, due to a number of factors, middle and high schools do not have the requisite information to finalize our master schedule and get those schedules out to you.

Please join us in welcoming Hanna Sites to the Spencer Butte Staff.  Hanna has joined our office team as the Attendance Secretary.  Salena Bowen has moved into Secretary position and Heather Acharya is our new Records and Scheduling Assistant.  Our office team is here to support your family throughout your time at Spencer Butte and especially during distance learning.

We will be distributing iPads once again! Every student needs to have a school issued iPad for distance learning.  If your student still needs an iPad, please come on Monday, August 31st between 11:00am and 1:00 pm at the front entry of Spencer Butte Middle School.  Please pull up to the front of the building and a staff member will greet you at your car.  We will be practicing social distancing, please wear a mask. Thanks for your patience, understanding, and flexibility as we navigate the school year together.  If you have any questions please contact Hanna Sites, 541-790-8300/

In these tough economic times, many families are finding their finances tighter than ever. The school meal program may be able to help. The program is confidential, easy, and good for both your budget and our school.

A new application (one per household) must be completed each school year to qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. Applications are available online (, in the school office, and at the 4J Education Center (200 North Monroe, Eugene), and can be returned to your school or to the 4J Education Center.  We encourage you to fill out the application online if possible.

As some of you may have noticed, we have not published a school supply list for this year.  At this point, with all students receiving iPads, specific school supplies are not necessary.  If your family needs help with basic supplies such as pencils, pens and paper please reach out to the office as we are happy to provide these supplies.

The yearbook order has just arrived and we are working on creating a distribution plan.  Thank you for your patience and stay tuned for distribution information.
