*This event is being funded by the Oregon Health Authority and Lines for Life Suicide Rapid Response Program and has been organized in collaboration with Lane County Public Health.

KINDNESS DAY AND STUDENT PICK UP

Next Friday, April 29th we are having a Day of Kindness with our students. Students will perform random acts of kindness with supplies purchased using funds raised during our Fall Kind-of-A-thon event. Some of these activities will take students off campus (within walking distance). Just a reminder for families to please notify the office before 1 pm on this day if you will need to pick up your student early, so we can be sure to have them available.

EUGENE EDUCATION FOUNDATION (EEF) UPCOMING FUNDRAISER

Eugene Education Foundation raises funds for Eugene School District 4J. These funds make possible hundreds of grants each year within the district that enhance the education of students in 4J schools. EEF awarded over $223,000 to schools and district level programs this year, and that figure doesn’t even cover their efforts to promote reading fluency by third grade via their Literacy Initiative, and grant support through Urgent Needs and Rosie’s Fund, which provide support for individual interventions to students who are in crisis or are facing other significant barriers to learning. EEF helps make learning happen in 4J through community support. Their largest fundraiser of the year, their Annual Dinner, is on May 13. For more information about EEF and their 2022 Annual Dinner: On Track for Success, visit their website: eef@eeflane.org, or the event registration page: https://bit.ly/EEFannualdinner22

SUMMER BRIDGE AT SOUTH EUGENE HIGH SCHOOL- CALLING ALL 8TH GRADERS
Please consider attending the Summer Bridge program, held August 1st-5th, at South Eugene High School. Morning and Afternoon sessions are offered. Summer Bridge provides opportunities to meet other incoming freshmen and school staff, gets acquainted with the high school campus, enjoy free breakfast foods and lunch daily, and learn how to make good decisions that will positively impact your time at high school and beyond.

Summer Bridge is held in cooperation with The Decision Education Foundation. See attached brochures for more information.

OSAS/STATE TESTING

Oregon Middle School State Testing starts May 2nd. Every year, students in grades 3–8 and 11 complete state tests. These assessments are only one measure of a student’s academic success, but provide important information for students, parents and schools.  State tests were suspended in the 2019–20 school year and reduced in 2020–21 due to the pandemic and schools’ shift to distance learning. For the 2021–22 school year, state testing is expected to return to normal and students will complete the annual state tests this spring.

Parents may opt their student(s) out of State Testing by filling out the ODE State Testing opt out form which is located in the Spencer Butte Office, or see the attachment on this Spartan Update.

FOOD IN THE OFFICE

Recently, the number of students coming to the office and requesting food throughout the school day has been overwhelming. We understand a lot of students are responsible for bringing their own lunch and snacks, and may not be packing enough or anything at all. However, the office only has enough extra food on hand for emergent situations and are asking families to please remind your students to make sure they bring enough food with them each school day. As usual, if your family needs nutritional support at school, please reach out to Heather Acharya Acharya_h@4j.lane.edu
