SBMS Safety Update 10/30/25
Dear Spencer Butte Families,
I am reaching out to share information about a situation at school today that you or your students may have heard about.
A student brought an empty .38 caliber shell casing (the metal tube left from a spent bullet) and showed it to other students in a bathroom. A casing is not dangerous. A photo of the casing was shared by students, and this created a concern that the casing was related to a safety threat. We want to reassure you that our school staff worked with the district School Safety team to thoroughly investigate and respond to the situation. There are no weapons, dangerous objects, or threats to the school community.
Since there was no threat or disruptive actions, we did not use our standard response protocols. To learn more about the standard response protocols of Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuation or Shelter, and how 4J schools may respond to crisis situations to support student safety, visit the I Love U Guys Foundation.
We appreciate the support of students, staff and families in maintaining a safe school community. As always, we urge you to talk to your students about the importance of communicating school safety concerns with school staff: "See or Hear Something, Say Something!" In partnership with the Oregon State Police, Eugene School District 4J uses the Safe Oregon tip line, and reports can even be made anonymously: https://www.safeoregon.com/report-a-tip/.
The safety and well being of all of our students will continue to be our highest priority. Thank you for your partnership in this important process. Please contact me with any questions.
Regards,
Paula Nolan
