Spencer Butte Middle School

Spartan Update- Week of 6/1/26

Posted Date: 05/31/26 (04:02 PM)

A logo for Spencer Butte Middle School.

The logo features a stylized illustration of a school building situated on a stylized landscape with rolling hills and water.

The building is depicted in dark navy blue, with large, light-blue windows visible. Pine trees are outlined in light blue at the top of the image, behind the building. The hills and water are rendered in varying shades of light blue.

Below the illustration, the words "SPENCER BUTTE" are written in a clean, sans-serif font in dark navy blue. "Middle School" is written in a smaller, matching font below that. The overall color scheme is cool toned, using shades of blue and white.

Spartan Update

Week of 6/1/26

Picture of a school that captures the SBMS school campus area under a bright, clear sky. The architecture is characterized by mid-century modern design elements: slanted rooftops with clean lines, supported by slender columns, giving a sense of openness and functionality.

The foreground features a row of trees, some with lush green foliage and others displaying vibrant autumnal colors, suggesting a transition in seasons. These trees add natural warmth and breathing space to the otherwise structured environment. Alongside the trees, neatly kept bushes and a paved walkway create a welcoming atmosphere for students or visitors.

In the background, the school buildings are made of stucco and large glass windows, emphasizing both durability and the importance of natural light. The overall scene evokes a tranquil, well-maintained educational setting.
An image celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride Month featuring the Progress Pride Flag. The flag consists of the traditional six horizontal stripes of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. On the left side, a chevron points toward the right, featuring five additional stripes: white, pink, light blue, brown, and black. In the bottom right corner, overlaid on the blue and purple stripes, the bold white text reads "LGBTQ+ Pride Month".

Close-up of a woman with shoulder-length wavy brown hair. She is wearing glasses with black frames and a gray, possibly knit, turtleneck-style sweater. The sweater has a slightly asymmetrical design at the neckline, with two visible round, light gray or beige buttons.

Note from Principal Paula Nolan

Hello SBMS Community!

Still Time to Finish Strong!
There's 2 weeks left of school and most of the students who I have asked about summer are very excited! There's still learning to accomplish, so thank you for encouraging your student to continue to work hard in their classes.

Next Year at SBMS- Update Coming Later This Week
All schools and programs in the district have been impacted by the budget deficit. I will be sending a separate message later this week with information about Spencer Butte and some of the changes that are coming as a result of the impact of the budget reductions at our school.

Items of Note This Week:

Thursday-End of Year Concert 6/4 @ 6:30
Come and join us at our last band and orchestra concert of the year! Band and orchestra students are to arrive at 6:00.

Friday is a school day
There has been some confusion because of the elementary grading day on Friday, but middle schools and high schools are in session on Friday, 6/5.

Can you help us celebrate our 8th graders on 6/11?
After promotion practice on Thursday 6/11, a tradition at our school is to do a burrito lunch on the turf where the 8th graders also get their yearbooks a day early! We are looking for a few volunteers to pass out burritos and a few to pass out yearbooks.

Later that day we have our 8th grade promotion ceremony. After the ceremony we are looking for a few volunteers (from 6th or 7th grade families so the 8th grade families can celebrate) to cut and serve cake. We would do this ourselves, but cakes are set up during the ceremony and after we are helping with certificates, etc...

If you are interested in signing up to help with either option, please click here.

Next Week
School Play: Ax of Murder 6/10 @ 6:30
SBMS drama students have been working hard to prepare for this year's spring play, the mystery, Ax of Murder.

8th Grade Promotion 6/11 @ 6:15
A nice evening to celebrate our 8th graders as they promote to high school. Speeches in the large gym and cake will be served after the promotion in the front of the school.

Last Day of School 6/12: Students Released at 12:35
Friday 6/12 is our last day of school. Students will go to all of their classes on an abbreviated schedule and school will conclude at 12:35 PM.

June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ+) Pride Month

Pride Month is recognized in June to mark the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, which began on June 28, 1969. That night, New York City police officers raided The Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, a bar where members of the LGBTQ+ community often gathered. At the time, both homosexuality and gender expression that did not align with one's assigned sex were criminalized, so raids like this were not uncommon. On that night, bar patrons and community members resisted the raid. The resulting clash continued for six days, marking a pivotal moment in the movement for LGBTQ+ equality as activists increased visibility and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community to exist and live openly without fear of arrest.

Repeat: Free- Before and After School Academic Support

I am excited to share that we now have before and after school classwork help. Each week we have a team of education assistants who are available 8:00-8:30 Monday through Friday and 4:00-4:30 Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. The team will be in the front hallway tables, or if several students come for help, the group will move to the cafeteria. The help is drop-in so there is no signup required. Whether your student needs help or just a place to work, all students are welcome. If you have any questions, please contact me.
